What is Valentine's Day Really About?

Updated on January 22, 2013

What's it all About?

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, you can hardly turn on the radio or watch TV without advertisements for jewelry, chocolate, or flowers. It brought a question to my attention; What is Valentine's Day really all about? Is it simply a holiday to celebrate relationships and for the single folks to mourn? I beg to differ! So ok, sure we love to go on romantic dates with our significant others on this special day, but doesn't it just feel like there is more to it than that? I am hoping that whether you are happily involved with someone or miserably single you will be enlightened by this post!

Love One Another, for Love comes from God!

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:7-8

You guessed it love!  But maybe not in the romantic aspect you are thinking.  Valentine's Day is about celebrating and showing love in all spectrums.  It is a special time of the year we can do things for those we care about.  It's a time to step outside of ourselves and make someone else's day.  It's a day to celebrate where you are in life, and find the positive in it.  If you are married, celebrate it!  If you are single, celebrate the fact that you are independent, and spend the day spoiling yourself.

My point is this, let's add a little depth to the meaning of Valentine's Day, and get away from the mindset that it is a tacky holiday for the young.  Make it a time to go out of your way and show the people you love that you care!

7 Simple/Cheap Ways to Make Someone Else's Day

1. Give a good compliment. Not just a "I like your haircut," type of compliment. Instead, give a compliment that proves to the person you pay attention to them, and are really intune with who they are. Such as, "It's so incredible to see someone in today's self-preservative society, that is willing to put the needs of other's before their own."

2. Do a good deed that can't be traced back to you. Example: Leave extra quarters at the car wash, or write a nice note to someone you care about. The mystery of not knowing who it's from will make it that much more special. Doing good deeds isn't about getting credit for them.

3. Go to a restaurant and select a couple/family/individual to send dessert to.

4. Buy a card just because. This can sometimes carry more weight than a card on a special occasion because it is more likely to be a surprise.

5. Really listen to what others have to say, without any distractions. So often in life people just want to be heard and feel as though someone cares what they have to say.

6. Buy a small gift for someone you care about that acknowledges you pay attention. Buying someone their favorite candle scent, or even candy bar is a small gesture but it still sends the right message,"I was thinking of you, and I knew you liked this!"

7. TELL THEM! It doesn't get much simpler than that, and it definitely doesn't get any cheaper!

You be the Judge!

What is the most valuable thing someone has ever done for you?
